Assemblymember Fiona Ma at the Chamber – Chamber members heard from California State Assembly Speaker Pro Tempore Fiona Ma Tuesday at the February Public Policy Forum. Assemblymember Ma gave an update on the state budget and competing tax initiatives now on the November 2012 ballot. “We’re all trying to do the same thing – save services,” said Ma. “Having dueling measures is not going to help.” Assemblymember Ma also discussed California High-Speed Rail, state pension reform and the open primary system. The next Public Policy Forum is March 13 on the San Francisco Civil Grand Jury. Read more and register.  

Chamber Launches “Get Your Benefits” – The Chamber, in partnership with the Golden Gate Restaurant Association, the Small Business Network and other business groups, launched the “Get Your Benefits” website and video to inform employers and employees about changes to San Francisco’s Health Care Security Ordinance and how to access benefits.  The website, www.getyourbenefitsf.com, provides links to San Francisco’s Office of Labor Standards and Enforcement and features a commercial staring Board President David Chiu, Supervisor Malia Cohen, Supervisor Mark Farrell and Supervisor Scott Wiener. Supervisor Scott Wiener Targets Workforce Housing – Chamber members met with District 8 Supervisor Scott Wiener Wednesday at Supes for Lunch. Recently receiving the highest ranking on the Chamber’s Paychecks & Pink Slips Scorecard, Supervisor Wiener discussed his recent efforts to assist small businesses and highlighted the need to encourage the production of workforce housing. “We are becoming a city of rich and poor,” said Wiener. “We need to be more proactive about keeping the middle class in San Francisco.” Supervisor Wiener also discussed his focus on the city’s nightlife industry, food trucks, historic preservation and transportation.

This Week in Public Policy – The Board of Supervisors tabled a charter amendment to repeal Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) and delayed voting on a dueling measure to change the instant runoff system - effectively keeping both measures off the June Ballot. The Budget and Finance Committee delayed plans to recapitalize the city’s Revolving Loan Fund. Supervisor John Avalos proposed legislation requiring downtown buildings to provide bicycle parking for building employees. The Santa Clara City Council approved plans for a new 49ers stadium, finalizing the team's exit from San Francisco by 2014. Congress is considering two federal transportation bills: the Chamber-opposed House bill (HR7) and the Chamber-supported Senate bill (Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century or MAP-21).

Members Making NewsOrange Photography is launching Crush, a new retail brand dedicated to serving retail markets including weddings, family events, and portraiture. To celebrate, Orange will also award $10,000 in wedding photography services to one lucky couple who submits the Best Crush Story. SPUR has published a new report about the vulnerability of San Francisco's housing stock to a major earthquake. Wells Fargo presented $150,000 in education grants to the California Academy of Sciences Careers in Science Intern Program and the San Francisco State University  Promise Program.
