| Public Power Packs a Punch – San Francisco’s public power program will cost the city $19.5 million and ratepayers a 77 percent premium over current rates according to a new report released by the City Controller. “At a time of continued economic recovery, the city’s proposed contract for clean power will have negative effects on city agencies, business and residential ratepayers, while falling short of its guarantee to deliver 100 percent renewable energy,” said Chamber President & CEO Steve Falk. According to the report, the program will divert electric payments from the local economy, reduce consumer spending and result in job losses – amounting to a total economic loss of $8 million per year. The Chamber will continue to keep members updated on the program, which will automatically enroll all residential customers, unless they opt-out during the enrollment window. Read more. | Planning for Economic Growth – The Chamber and the San Francisco Center for Economic Development (SFCED) recently got an update on the city’s economic development strategy mandated by voters in 2004 with the passage of Chamber-supported Proposition I. San Francisco’s Chief Economist Ted Egan met with members to discuss the city’s economy, workforce and demography and how they impact San Francisco's growth horizon. “San Francisco’s slow rate of employment growth, in a region where job growth has been healthy, suggests that city-specific factors inhibit job creation here,” reports Egan in the office’s Phase I Findings. The Chamber and the SFCED continue to support the city's efforts to update San Francisco's economic plan and develop strategies for future growth. Read more. |

| Bringing the Gay Games to S.F. in 2022 – The Chamber is proud to support the bid to return the Gay Games to San Francisco in 2022. Originally started in San Francisco in 1982, the Gay Games has become the world's largest sporting and cultural event organized by and specifically for LGBT athletes, artists, musicians, and others. If secured for San Francisco, the event is expected to attract more than 20,000 athletes and supporters, delivering a significant economic boost to the city. “2022 will represent the 40th anniversary of the creation of the Gay Games and would provide a perfect opportunity to return the games to their ‘home’ of San Francisco,” said Ken Craig, President of the 2022 GG-XI San Francisco Exploratory Committee. | THIS WEEK IN PUBLIC POLICY |

The Board of Supervisors is in recess until August 31. Mayor Ed Lee dropped plans for a stop-and-frisk policy and announced a new anti-violence strategy for the city. North Beach opponents to the Central Subway expansion filed a lawsuit to block construction of the project. The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) will increase the cost of taxi medallions and collect a transfer fee to generate $14 million in two years. The agency also released a new policy document clarifying its on-street parking management strategies. California Senator Kevin de León proposed legislation to ban state contracts with out-of-state firms that use a method of calculating taxes that accounts for property and payroll, rather than one based solely on a firm's sales in California.
