More Taxis Coming to S.F. – The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) has approved a Chamber-supported plan to bring 150 to 200 new cabs to the city’s streets, increasing the number of city taxis by 13 percent. “Since 2007, we’ve been screaming for more taxicabs at my company,” said Chamber member John Lazar, president of Luxor Cab. “We haven’t been able to come close to addressing our demand.” The Chamber urged the SFMTA to authorize the new medallions to meet unmet demand resulting from the city's growing population and tourism industry. New operating permits will soon start becoming available to cab companies meeting specific performance measures and will last up to three years. Each new permit will cost $1,900 a month, generating $4.6 million in new annual revenue for the city. Read more.

New 401(k) Fee Disclosure Rules Explained – Chamber members learned about the new 401(k) fee disclosure rules from MassMutual Retirement Services Northern California Managing Director Molly Knapp Wednesday at the September Small Business Issues Forum. “It is crucial to take the time to ensure both you and your plan are in compliance with the new DOL fee disclosures on both the plan and participant level now that the requirements are active for both levels,” Knapp stressed. The next Small Business Issues Forum is Wednesday, October 3rd on Cyber Security for Small Business. Read more and register.

THIS WEEK IN PUBLIC POLICY

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors refused to overturn their vote approving the Chamber-supported 8 Washington project, forcing a citywide voter referendum on the November 2013 ballot. The Board also voted to eliminate a section of the police code requiring owners of antique stores and pawnshops to provide transaction records of their consumers and gave preliminary approval to legislation streamlining the permitting process for developers to install non-potable water reuse systems in large buildings. Mayor Ed Lee greenlighted a plan to mandate treatment for chronic inebriates who are costing the city millions in hospitals, courts and jail costs. A Superior Court Judge ruled that the wording, approved for Prop. F (the Drain Hetch Heathy measure) by the city’s Ballot Simplification Committee, was not prejudicial and should be allowed to stand. The California legislature approved the Governor’s pension reform proposal and passed Chamber-supported ADA reform bill SB 1186. The Legislature voted against a bill that would have required all corporations to base their tax on in-state sales only.
