| Preview of Moscone Center Expansion – Chamber members got an update on San Francisco’s booming tourism industry and a preview on the $500 million project to expand Moscone Center Tuesday at the September Public Policy Forum. “The state of San Francisco’s tourism industry is very strong,” said San Francisco Travel Association President and CEO Joe D'Alessandro. “But things can change quickly, and in order to stay competitive we’ve got to expand Moscone Center.” D'Alessandro discussed the city’s record breaking year of visitors and spending, the 25 year Master Plan to enhance Moscone Center, and the significant economic impact of the project for the city. The next Public Policy Forum is October 9 with the Department of Public Works on the city’s Road Repaving and Street Safety Bond. Read more and register. |

October is Innovation Month – October is Innovation Month in San Francisco. Chamber foundation partner, the San Francisco Center for Economic Development (SFCED) is working with Mayor Ed Lee, the Office of Economic Workforce Development (OEWD) and other organizations to highlight the entrepreneurs driving job growth and celebrate the city’s status as the “Innovation Capital of the World.” The Chamber will give special recognition to an emerging local tech company helping to solve business and civic problems with the Comcast Innovation through Technology Award at the 2012 Excellence in Business (Ebbies) Awards Gala October 25 at the Westin St. Francis. | Fashion’s Night Out – Designers in Residence from the Chamber-supported Fashion Incubator San Francisco (FISF) debuted their Spring 2013 Collections last Thursday at Macy’s Union Square. The first-of-its-kind fashion incubator was developed in partnership with Chamber foundation partner, the San Francisco Center for Economic Development (SFCED), the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development (OEWD) and Chamber member Macy’s. “FISF is turning local designers into successful entrepreneurs, while helping the city to reclaim its legacy as a leader in the fashion industry,” said SFCED Executive Director Dennis Conaghan. “We congratulate the six Designers in Residence for their successful showing at Fashion’s Night Out.” Read more. |

The San Francisco Opera ushered in its 90th Season Friday with its high-profile opening gala and the production of Verdi’s 1851 “Rigoletto.” TemPositions is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. BART is celebrating its 40th anniversary. The San Francisco Travel Association's campaign "49 Hours of SF: Arts & Culture" won the 2012 Destiny Award from the U.S. Travel Association for best Full Marketing Campaign. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is poised to set a new all-time record for passenger traffic with more than more than 41 million passengers passing through its gates in 2011. The Chamber joined with business organization across the state in signing an Amicus Brief supporting the San Diego Association of Governments and its process for creating a regional transportation plan. A federal appeals court blocked the Chamber-opposed San Francisco mandate requiring local retailers to provide radiation absorption rate information for all cell phones sold. The Board of Supervisors Budget & Finance Committee voted 2-1 to support the Chamber-opposed CleanPowerSF contract with Shell Energy. The contract will go before the full Board of Supervisors for approval on Tuesday. The San Francisco Port Commission approved a water taxi service and a hop-on-hop-off shuttle service for the bay, which could begin as early as October 1. Supervisor Scott Wiener introduced legislation that would make it easier for developers to add up to five car-share spaces in buildings with fewer than 50 housing units. Governor Jerry Brown signed SB 1099 helping to create regulatory certainty for Califronia businesses and legislation authorizing the establishment of California trade offices overseas. Governor Brown appointed Kish Rajan as the director; Lillian Conroe and Janelle Green as small business specialists; Jorge Jaramillo as deputy director of external affairs; Will Koch as deputy director of legislative and inter-governmental affairs; and Jeff Malin as senior business development specialist of the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz).
