Wells Fargo Chief Financial Officer Tim Sloan addressed hundreds of business and civic leaders Wednesday at ForecastSF 2012.

Economic Growth Predicted at ForecastSF Jobs and economic growth were key themes Wednesday at ForecastSF, the region’s leading economic forecast and jobs summit presented by Wells Fargo in partnership with the Chamber and the San Francisco Center for Economic Development (SFCED). “San Francisco enjoys a dynamic economy with many amenities and strong fundamentals,” Wells Fargo Chief Economist John Silvia explained while providing an economic forecast showing continued above-average job growth for the region. S.F. Leading in Healthcare and Research –San Francisco’s healthcare and medical research sectors will continue to lead according to an updated study from San Francisco State University unveiled at ForecastSF on Wednesday. According to the report, commissioned by the Hospital Council of Northern & Southern California, San Francisco hospitals and biomedical firms are responsible for 104,035 jobs – almost one out of every five jobs in San Francisco, while innovation in the life sciences accounts for 30 percent of all innovation jobs across the Bay Area. The sectors' spending generates $16.7 billion for the city economy each year. “San Francisco is known as a global center of innovation,” said the study’s author Philip King, Ph.D., Associate Professor, San Francisco State University. “And innovation in the life sciences and biomedical research plays a key role in this reputation and our region’s continued economic success.” Click here to view the full report. Chamber Toasts Ebbies Finalists – The Chamber toasted the 2012 Excellence in Business Awards (Ebbies) finalists last Thursday at a special reception previewing the 19 companies and three Bain & Company “Change Leader” nominees at One Hawthorne San Francisco. “The Chamber congratulates all our finalists for their vision and innovation,” said Chamber President & CEO Steve Falk. S.F. Innovation Hub Expansion Chamber foundation partner San Francisco Center for Economic Development (SFCED) Executive Director Dennis Conaghan joined Governor Brown’s Senior Advisor on jobs and business development Mike Rossi, the Governor’s Office of Business and Economic Development (GO-Biz) newly appointed Director Kish Rajan and others Wednesday to announce the expansion of the San Francisco Innovation Hub (iHub) in Mission Bay to include the entire City and County of San Francisco. The expansion now includes the city’s well established biotech, cleantech and high tech industries, as well as the city’s fashion and art communities. “San Francisco’s Mission Bay is the largest and most sophisticated life science and healthcare cluster in the U.S.,” said Conaghan. “This expanded state designation further brands our city as a world class, urban innovation center.” Read more.
 
Marc Levine at the Chamber Chamber members met State Assembly candidate Marc Levine at a meet-and-greet Monday. A San Rafael city councilman, Levine is running for the District 10 (Marin/Sonoma) Assembly seat. He discussed education and pension reforms, and how San Francisco’s political environment impacts Marin. “We must have policy-making that understands how bound we are to each other. Marin’s economy depends on what happens in San Francisco,” said Levine, who was endorsed by The San Francisco Chronicle this week. Read more.

The city’s expanded plastic bag ban went into effect Monday. The Board of Supervisors postponed voting on legislation proposed by Supervisor Scott Wiener to change the building code to lower the minimum size for apartments to allow for micro-units as small as 220 square feet. Board of Supervisors President David Chiu introduced legislation to crack down on short-term corporate apartment rentals. The California Transportation Commission approved nearly $40 million in state funds for Caltrain’s positive train control system. Governor Jerry Brown signed 876 bills and vetoed 120 others this week. The California Community College Board of Governors named  Brice Harris as the new chancellor for state’s community college system.
