Bidding for the Super Bowl – San Francisco was selected as one of two finalists to host the Super Bowl in 2016 or 2017. A Chamber-supported Bay Area Bid Committee is now working to secure the event, which would be hosted by the City and County of San Francisco and played in the 49ers new stadium in Santa Clara. As the biggest U.S. sporting event, the Super Bowl is expected to bring hundreds of millions in revenue to the host region. “San Francisco has proven time and again that we know how to host the world for major events and shine on the international stage,” said Mayor Ed Lee. “A Super Bowl in the Bay Area will bring an enormous economic boost to our entire region.” Read more. |

| Warriors Arena Plans Unveiled – The Golden State Warriors unveiled the design and finance plans for the Chamber-supported waterfront arena during a community meeting Tuesday. The plans call for a 135-foot-tall, 17,500-seat glass-covered arena located on the southeast edge of Piers 30-32 surronded by eight acres of terraced plazas. The privately-financed project will be developed by the Warriors, which will recieve a 66-year lease for Piers 30-32. The project is expected to generate 5,000 temporary and 2,800 permanent jobs, while delivering $19 million in annual revenue and $54 million in one-time fees and taxes for the city. The Warriors will also pay up to $120 million for pier restoration and repair, normally a Port expense, which will be repaid from revenue generated by the project. | Yellow Pages Ban Under Scrutiny – The Chamber-opposed ban on the Yellow Pages may be halted following a federal court ruling striking down a similar ban in Seattle. According to the U.S. Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, Yellow Page Directories qualify for full protection under the First Amendment. In light of the ruling, the City Attorney’s office will review the San Francisco legislation, which is more severe than Seattle’s by requiring directory publishers to get permission before delivering a phone book to city residents. “This ban will not only harm local businesses and eliminate jobs – it also violates the First Amendment,” said Chamber President & CEO Steve Falk. “San Francisco should not waste any more taxpayer money defending legislation that is sure to be struck down in the courts.” The Chamber favors an opt-out approach to reducing the delivery of unwanted phone books and supports the industry’s website www.yellowpagesoptout.com.
