Planning for SF’s Future – The Board of Supervisors approved the city’s $27 billion Ten-Year Capital Plan Tuesday. The Chamber-supported plan will bring needed improvements and seismic safety retrofits to the city’s roads, hospitals, schools, parks and public safety buildings, while creating 190,000 new construction-related jobs. “The plan provides us with an objective and realistic roadmap to create local jobs and prioritize improvements to our infrastructure,” said Mayor Newsom. Chamber Weighs in on Arizona Boycott – As Mayor Gavin Newsom continues to consider the Boycott against Arizona proposed by the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday, the Chamber urges caution. “Obviously, most San Franciscans don’t like the Arizona immigration law, but a boycott is the wrong way to make a political statement,” said Chamber President & CEO Steve Falk. “A boycott may hurt San Francisco businesses with operations and vendors in Arizona and gives rise to a reverse boycott on San Francisco. Arizona is one of San Francisco's top 10 markets for tourism and convention business, and a boycott will only put San Francisco businesses and jobs at risk. It also has the potential to hurt the very people it is intended to help." To voice your opinion, call (415) 352-8848 or email comment@sfchamber.com. Read more
Chamber Watches Cell Phone Regulation - Both the city and state are considering laws that would require retailers to post precautionary warning labels and the specific absorption rates for all cellular phones sold. If approved, The proposed laws would take effect despite the fact that cell phones already comply with federal health regulations and the uncertainty surrounding the potential risks of cell phone radiation. "The Chamber is watching this legislation very closely," said Chamber Senior Vice President of Public Policy Jim Lazarus. "Clearly this is a federal issue and acting in isolation will only put California retailers at a competitive disadvantage to online and out-of-state retailers during an already challenging time in our economy."
