topstory Masonic Center Renovations to Boost Economy – The City Planning Commission voted last Thursday on a Chamber-supported plan to renovate the Masonic Center into a modern entertainment venue run by Live Nation.

The plans call for approximately $6 million in renovations to the historic auditorium to help keep mid-sized entertainment shows – and dollars - in San Francisco.  Chamber Vice President of Public Policy Rob Black said the project will “bring the vitality we’d like to see in San Francisco.” The Chamber will continue to advocate for the renovations as opponents threaten an appeal to the economy-boosting project. Portable Fire Fighting Water System for San Francisco On the heals of the Haiti and Chile earthquakes, Chamber members heard from San Francisco Fire Department (SFFD) Captain Tom Doudiet Tuesday on the city’s Portable Water Supply System Expansion Project.  The project will deliver a system of portable hydrants and hoses that can be utilized with a variety of water sources during a natural disaster. “The San Andres and Hayward faults are ticking tectonic time bombs,” said Doudiet noting that fires account for 75 percent of the damage caused by earthquakes. Because this portable equipment is not bond-eligible, the Chamber has urged the city to seek state and federal grants to fully implement the system. The Chamber Board of Directors has voted unanimously to support the Earthquake Safety and Emergency Response Bond on the June ballot, which includes $166 million to seismically retrofit the auxiliary fire fighting water system in San Francisco.  Contact Jim Lazarus at jlazarus@sfchamber.com or 415.352.8810.
