Ban on Same-Sex Marriage Ruled Unconstitutional – Federal Judge Vaughn R. Walker ruled California’s ban on same-sex marriage (Proposition 8) unconstitutional Wednesday. “The Chamber is pleased with this landmark ruling for marriage equality and we will continue to work to end marriage discrimination in California,” said Chamber Senior V.P. of Public Policy Jim Lazarus. New Jobs Tax Credits – Businesses who hire someone who has not worked more than 40 hours in the past 60 days may be eligible for two new tax credits as part of the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment (HIRE) Act. Employers can claim a 6.2 percent payroll tax exemption in quarterly federal tax returns beginning with the second quarter of 2010. Employers may also claim an additional new hire retention credit, up to $1,000 for each qualified employee, on 2011 business income tax returns. Read more

Temporary Transbay Terminal Opens Saturday – Starting August 7, AC Transit, Golden Gate Transit, Greyhound, Muni, SamTrans and WestCAT Lynx will be relocating from the Transbay Terminal to a new temporary terminal at Howard and Main Streets. The temporary terminal will house transit operations while the Transbay Transit Center is being built. The Chamber-supported new Transbay Transit Center will create a modern regional transit hub connecting eight Bay Area counties and the State of California through 11 transit systems including future High Speed Rail from San Francisco to Los Angeles/Anaheim. Chamber Members Learn to Leverage Social Media – Chamber members heard from Social Media Catalyst, Trainer & Connector Carlos R. Hernandez Wednesday at the Small Business Issues Forum. During the session, Hernandez provided tips for businesses to leverage social media and discussed the difference between return on investment and return on influence. “This is exactly the sort of engaging conversation that happens every month at the Small Business Issues Forum,” said Tauber Architects principal Michael Tauber. The monthly forum connects fellow small business owners on issues pertinent to operating, maintaining and growing a small business in San Francisco. Read more
