Jobs NOW! Extension Moves to the Senate – The House of Representatives voted Friday to pass H.R. 4213, the bill extending the city’s Jobs NOW! subsidized employment program for another year and pledging $2.5 billion for similar jobs programs across the country. By subsidizing 100 percent of the salary costs for new qualified hires, the Jobs NOW! program has helped more than 515 local private-sector businesses hire 1,177 employees. The Chamber strongly urges the Senate to approve a similar bill allowing employers to continue these employees and add new workers through September 2011. Learn more
Mayor Proposes Balanced City Budget – Mayor Newsom proposed Tuesday a $6.48 billion budget for fiscal year 2010-2011. Prioritizing jobs and economic development, the budget proposal will close the city’s half-a-billion dollar budget deficit largely through government efficiencies, union concessions and the contracting out of government services. “The Chamber applauds Mayor Newsom for putting together a balanced budget without new taxes,” said Chamber President & CEO Steve Falk. The Chamber will continue to work with the Mayor and the Board of Supervisors through the budget process to urge solutions that will create jobs without placing added burdens on residents and local businesses. U.S. Solicitor General Weighs in on Healthy San Francisco Lawsuit – U.S. Solicitor General Neal Kumar Katyal filed a brief Friday recommending against the U.S. Supreme Court hearing the Golden Gate Restaurant Association's (GGRA) legal challenge to the Employer Spending Requirement (ESR) of the Health Care Security Ordinance (HCSO). “The GGRA was not surprised by the Solicitor General's Amicus Curiae brief,” said GGRA executive director Kevin Westlye noting a recent ERISA case (Conkright v. Frommert) in which the Supreme Court ruled in favor of the petitioner. Katyal’s opinion comes as local businesses try to understand the impacts of the new health care legislation. The Chamber will host an interactive seminar on June 16 to help employers make sense of the health care reform bill and what it means for business. Read more and register
