Baseball fans are cheering because bats are swinging and balls are being thrown in the newly constructed Pacific Bell Park. The $306 million project was completed April 2000, just in time for the National League's San Francisco Giants' first home game. It took more than 2,000 construction workers and more than 650,000 bricks to build the 42,000-seat stadium.

The Giants are a franchise rich in personality, character and winning tradition. They have won more pennants than any other National League franchise and have more players in baseball's Hall of Fame than any other major-league team. The club played 74 years in New York before moving to San Francisco in 1958.

Across the bay, the American League's Athletics have been Oakland's home team for 29 seasons. The history of the A's has been colorful and marked by many successes, including a record 10 division titles, 15 American League pennants and nine world championships.

The National Football Leagues' San Francisco 49ers was the first professional sports franchise on the West Coast. During the past 16 seasons, San Francisco's football team has won more than 70 percent of its games and posted an NFL record of 13 straight seasons with 10 or more victories. In 1994, the Niners made NFL history by becoming the first team to capture five Superbowl championships. The 49ers currently play at 3Com Park.

The American Football League's Oakland Raiders play in the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum, just next door to the Golden State Warriors. Originally from Philadelphia, the Warriors are one of the charter members of the National Basketball Association, along with the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks. The franchise has provided more Rookie-of-the-Year winners than any other team in the NBA.

Down the peninsula, San Jose boasts two professional sports teams: the National Hockey League's Sharks and the Clash, a pro-soccer franchise.
